Author: Kerrie Moore

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (TGHNSLSC) proudly participated in the 2024 Surf Life Saving NSW Conference, held on the 27th and 28th of July. Representing our club at this significant event were Club President Rebecca Curtis, Vice President Amanda Osmond, and Club Captain Wayne Bower.

This two-day conference was a tremendous opportunity for surf life saving leaders across New South Wales to come together, exchange ideas and develop strategies for a more sustainable and effective surf life saving movement. The primary focus was on enhancing volunteer recruitment and retention, as well as optimising the delivery of lifesaving services to our communities.

Key Takeaways from the Conference:

  1. Sustainability in Surf Life Saving: One of the central themes of the conference was creating a sustainable future for surf life saving. Discussions centered on innovative approaches to attract new volunteers while ensuring the continued engagement of current members. Emphasis was placed on the importance of community involvement and support in maintaining the vitality of surf life saving clubs.
  2. Volunteer Recruitment and Retention: The conference highlighted various successful strategies employed by different clubs to recruit and retain volunteers. Attendees shared best practices and innovative ideas, such as tailored training programs and recognition initiatives, to keep volunteers motivated and committed to the cause.
  3. Enhancing Grassroots Services: Another critical aspect of the conference was the improvement of grassroots lifesaving services. Workshops and sessions focused on refining lifesaving techniques, improving beach safety protocols, and ensuring that all community members have access to high-quality lifesaving services. The goal is to make our beaches safer and more welcoming for everyone.
  4. Networking and Collaboration: The event provided a valuable platform for networking and collaboration among surf life saving clubs. Leaders from various regions had the chance to share their unique experiences and insights, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual support within the surf life saving community.
